The 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to David Thouless, Duncan Haldane, and Mike Kosterlitz for their contributions to topological phase transitions and topological invariant of matter. In this talk I will present historical and current background, and describe our TKNN invariant for the integer quantum Hall effect, as well as the topological order of quantum liquid states in quantum spin chains.
