The so-called Standard Model of high-energy physics describes more than elementary particles. There are, in particular, also instantons and sphalerons, which are nonperturbative solutions of the field equations.
In this Colloquium, we give a brief introduction to sphalerons and discuss their relation to chiral anomalies, which is relevant to physics applications.
