Through a correspondence known as "gauge/gravity duality", the horizon of a black hole can be viewed as a strongly interacting quantum system. In recent years there has been progress in understanding how the horizon of a black hole conducts electrical charge. I will describe some of these results and compare our new understanding to the behaviour of strongly correlated electron systems.
