I originally developed string theory as a theory of strongly interacting hadrons, but soon found that it is a theory of quantum gravity. It offered enormous progress for understanding many puzzles on semiclassial gravity such as black hole entropy, information loss, blackhole formation from ultra high-energy scattering and big bang cosmology. In this colloquium, I overview 40 years of string theory development and bring up outstanding open issues for further progress.
