High magnetic fields have played a critical role in modern condensed matter physics, including studies of the quantum Hall effect, high temperature superconductivity, and the Fermiology of low dimensional organic materials. At present, high magnetic fields have created new excitement in the area of transport in nanomaterials and also quantum critical phenomena. In this talk I will review some aspects of high magnetic field research and facilities, and give examples of some of the more exciting research that has and is being done, including some of the experiments that present and former SNU researchers and students have done at the NHMFL in Tallahassee.
