Semiconductor quantum dots grown by self assembling processes have near ideal optical properties which have given rise to a whole range of new physics and device applications. Following an introduction to the basic properties, this talk will review many of the most important recent advances including the effects of structure on optical properties,
long spin lifetimes, dots as quantum bits and applications as high performance semiconductor lasers for telecommunications applications.
