Silicon is the dominant semiconductor material of today, but is limited
in its application to photonics due to its indirect bandgap. In this
talk, I will present results of using Si nanocrystals, either by
themselves or with rare earth doping, to obtain Si-based optical
materials for Si micro photonics. Many issues ranging from basic
fabrication to physical mechanisms will be discussed, and possibility
of application demonstrated.
