Microspheres and microcylinders of tens of microns in radius can be used as high quality laser resonators and narrow-band optical filters. I will first review our work on microlasers based on laser gain only present in the evanescent field region of ultrahigh-Q whispering gallery modes (WGM's) of microcylinders or microspheres. I will show that this type of microlasers is immune to pumping-related thermal degradation of cavity quality factor Q, resulting in a record Q value of 10^10. In the language of quantum chaos I will then discuss the first observation of scarred mode lasing in asymmetrically deformed microcavities, which can give rise to high-directional output beams of WGM-like scarred mode.
