많은 구성요소로 이루어진 복잡계에서 떠오름과 복잡성을 주로 연구합니다. 복잡계는 전통적인 물질뿐 아니라 생명체와 사회를 포함하며, 그동안 다룬 주제로는 초전도계, 전자계, 물, 가루, 복잡그물얼개, 결합 떨개, 신경그물얼개와 두뇌, 인슐린 분비와 혈당 조절, 세포의 자가포식, 사람의 동작과 잠자기, 교통그물얼개와 승객흐름, 여론의 형성과 전파, 도시의 지형, 금융과 주식배당 따위가 있습니다. 나아가 과학의 의미와 문화 등 인문학까지 범위를 넓혀서 통합학문을 구축하려 시도합니다.
