The continuous-wave (CW) operation of a 1,550 nm photonic crystal laser for a duration of 18 hours was made possible by the use of an efficient heat-dissipating submount comprised of silicon, diamond, MgF2 and an additional MgF2 confinement layer on the top surface of the device.
