Hybrid quantum system based on mechanical oscillators is a rapidly emerging field both in fundamental physics and quantum information applications. Observing quantum phenomena from macroscopic mechanical objects can be a test bed for studying fundamental quantum mechanics, particularly the boundary between classical and quantum mechanics. Exploiting mechanical degree of freedom in hybrid quantum networks, on the other hand, can provide a unique way to mediate and transduce quantum information between distinct and distant quantum systems, as mechanical motion can couple to a wide range of quantum systems via the force they exert. In this talk, we will present hybrid quantum system where high-quality diamond mechanical oscillators coupled to embedded atom-like defect centers. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect centers in diamond are solid-state spin-qubits possessing remarkable quantum properties applicable to various fields including quantum information science and quantum sensing. Using strain associated with the resonator’s mechanical motion, we will demonstrate coherent mechanical control of NV’s spin and optical properties. We will also discuss future aspects of spin-mechanical hybrid systems such as strain-mediated long range spin-spin interaction, indistinguishable photon generation and ground state phonon cooling.
