SNU Physics Department is unique among Korean universities in that it had maintained 2-3 professors in the field of statistical physics for 34 years and has been the leader of the field in Korea. I will discuss some history and legacy of the statistical physics tradition at SNU, how its research and education evolved during the years, and finally the challenges of the field as a discipline in SNU Physics which strives to become a world leading institute.
