Holography means encoding information of dimensionful objects in lower
dimensions. It has been conceived that quantum gravity should have a
holographic description. This idea met string theory more than a
decade ago and led us to a new perspective of string theory, as well
as providing us with unexpected applications to various areas in
physics. I will explain the idea of holography in string theory and
some recent developments in its foundation and applications.
