Neutron scattering is a powerful experimental tool for all branches of material sciences, including condensed matter physics, and provides very rich and microscopic information about the structure and dynamics of matter with unparalleled depth and width. Arguably, no other experimental tool can match the power of neutron scattering in the ultimate test of our understanding of matter and nature: Where atoms are and what atoms do.
With the 30 MW research reactor (HANARO) at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and its current cold neutron project, the future of neutron scattering in Korea is very bright, and it will be able to serve very diverse user communities not only in Korea and but also from other foreign countries. In this talk, I will present a few scientific examples of scientific cases, in which neutron scattering has played a very important role in enriching our understanding. I will also discuss how we can best use HANARO in order to strengthen our condensed matter physics community in Korea.
