Biophysics

To the best of our knowledge, life is locally observed only on Earth in the immense Universe, and life phenomena, therefore, take only a minor position of physics research which includes diverse phenomena observed in the whole Universe. When we say that the final goal of Science is to understand ourselves, however, understanding life becomes the central problem of whole scientific research. Biophysics is a part of physics that studies the operation principles of life using various tools in physics such as statistical mechanics, computational physics, nanosciences, and state-of-the-art optical techniques. Its research topics include fascinating, mysterious life phenomena observed from the single-molecule level to the whole organism level. In addition, the efforts to develop practical technologies such as molecular sensing, and medical diagonosis/analsys are on going at the physics department of SNU .
